May 2021 Currently Available Turnings

I have added some new turnings to my “availables,” which I hope you’ll take a look at and perhaps decide to acquire for your own collection. These were all turned this year. Unlike most of the pieces listed in the previous post, these pieces are less functional, a little more rustic, more on the art side. (There are still a number of pieces available from that earlier group, listed in the previous post. The ones that have been sold are clearly indicated; the rest are available.) I’ll be happy to answer any questions or provide additional photos.

As before, all proceeds from these sales net of shipping will go to Feeding America to support it’s work in alleviating hunger in our country. The previous project provided them with $880.

23. Natural-edged Cherry Crotch End-Grain Bowl. $100.

This piece was turned in an end grain orientation at the point where two branches emerged from a larger branch, hence the “crotch.” The “wings” are the remaining outside surfaces of the two branches. The bark edges run from the branch around the trunk and out the other branch. The piece measures 10.25” from wing to wing, 6.75” wide at the widest point, and 5” high at the wings. Finished with Mahoney’s Catalyzed Walnut Oil.

24. Cherry Burl Hollowform I, $75 (or, paired with item 25. Cherry Burl Hollowform II, $125 for both) SOLD.

This piece and the one that follows were both turned from the same cherry burl, which did not lend itself to turning one larger piece. There are extensive bark inclusions, and the light colored sapwood meanders through the burl like a stream. The piece measures 5.5” across and 4.5” high. Finished with Mahoney’s Catalyzed Walnut Oil.

25. Cherry Burl Hollowform II, $75 (or, paired with item 25. Cherry Burl Hollowform I, $125 for both) SOLD

This piece was turned from the same cherry burl as item 24. Here there was a massive bark inclusion that opens into the piece on one side. Similar to the other piece, sapwood runs through sections of the burl as well, although here it is toward the sides and base because of the different orientation of the two pieces. 7” across and 4.25” high. Finished with Mahoney’s Catalyzed Walnut Oil.

26. Cherry End-Grain Lipped Bowl, $50 SOLD

I turned this bowl from the larger branch, or trunk section, which had been cut off the cherry crotch featured in item 23. It was turned in an end-grain orientation, which is to say that the grain runs vertically through the bowl. As a result, you get the interesting pattern of the darker heart wood forming a circular core in the center of the piece, with the light colored sapwood wrapping around it. 6.25” across and 4.5” high. Finished with Mahoney’s Catalyzed Walnut Oil.

27. Spalted Birch Tri-Cornered Bowl, $40 SOLD

This little gem was turned from a lightly spalted birch branch that had a smaller branch running through it. The turning technique was developed by a turner named Barbara Crockett. 6” across and 4.75” high at the points. Finished with wipe-on polyurethane.
